Unidimensional nanorods

Smart one-dimensional nanorods of zinc oxide have shown enhanced field and optical emission properties in a new research1

One-dimensional nanostructures of zinc oxide have received special attention recently due to their unique properties. While most of the efforts have been focused on the growth of high quality ZnO thin films, few reports have been published on the synthesis of ZnO nanorods and nanowires.

To make these one-dimensional nanorods, the researchers employed a simple N-cetyl-N,N,N-trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-assisted hydrothermal route. The method produced nanostructures of ZnO on zinc foil. With the increase of CTAB concentration, the one-dimensional structures changed from microrods to a mixture of nano- and microrods and finally to nanorods.

One-dimensional semiconductors can be utilized as components in nanometer-scale optoelectronic devices.
